White, Neuman Introduce Bills to Revamp Reassessments

State Reps. Brandon Neuman and Jesse White are introducing a series of bills that would revamp the way counties conduct property reassessments.

Neuman, D-North Strabane, and White, D-Cecil, said their legislation will streamline the system by which counties issue reassessments that often lead to tax hikes for homeowners.

“Reassessments need to be done, but they need to be done properly,” White said.

The lawmaker’s announcement was made hours after Judge Debbie O’Dell Seneca ordered county commissioners to hire a private firm to conduct reassessments.

County commissioners have five weeks to approve a contract for reassessment work and 10 weeks to have the funding in place to pay for it.

The reassessments, which will take more than two years to complete, are a veiled property tax increase, White said.

“If handled improperly, it could be a massive tax increase like people can’t even imagine,” he said.
