Broward sheriff’s deputies shot two people, killing one, after a confrontation with a group of robbery suspects Monday in Lauderdale Lakes.
It began shortly before 1:30 a.m. when deputies responded to a home-invasion robbery in the 4700 block of Northwest 24th Court.
They were clearing the scene when a man flagged them down and said his car had been stolen, said Keyla Concepción, a Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.
Octavius Sapp, 25, told deputies that several men approached him in a white van. Some of its passengers got out, pistol-whipped him and carjacked Sapp at gunpoint, Concepción said.
Deputies searched and found a white van driving in the nearby Woodsdale Oak Apartments complex, 2600 NW 49th Ave.
One deputy tried to stop the van and the driver responded by trying to run over him, Concepción said. The deputy fired his gun at the van, she said, but it continued moving until it stopped near the complex’s entrance.
